Bitcoin's hashrate has reached an unprecedented level, with the 7-day moving average hashrate exceeding 1 ZH/s (zerhash/second) for the first time over the weekend.
The milestone highlights the continued growth and resilience of the Bitcoin network, but at the same time, miners' profitability is being squeezed by rising mining difficulty and falling transaction fee revenue. According to network data, the surge in computing power is expected to trigger a difficulty increase of more than 7% in the next two days, further raising the threshold for computing required to mine new blocks. Throughout the summer, mining difficulty has reached an all-time high as power outages end during peak power periods and computing power gradually flows back to the network.
The increase in network computing power comes amid one of the weakest periods for transaction fee revenues in recent years. In August, transaction fees accounted for less than 0.8% of total block rewards, a multi-year low.
