U.S. Treasury Secretary Vincent: Proposed to Defend Trump Administration's Tariff Policy
2025-09-01 22:40:57
The US Treasury secretary revealed on Monday that he plans to draft a legal brief to defend President Donald Trump's administration's tariff policies in preparation for an appeal to the US Supreme Court. Mr. Bescent said the president was using his emergency powers to curb the madness of the growing US trade deficit, which he believes is approaching a tipping point that could lead to financial instability and an unsustainable trade balance. A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that Mr. Trump had exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on foreign countries. Mr. Trump urged the appeals court to block Friday's second tariff defeat, which would affect ongoing US negotiations with trade rivals. Mr. Bescent predicted the court would ultimately rule in favour of the administration. The deadline for filing an appeal is October 14.
