Syria exported 600,000 barrels of heavy crude oil from the port of Tartus on Monday under an agreement with trading companies, the country's first known official oil export in 14 years, Syrian energy officials said. Syria exported 380,000 barrels of oil a day in 2010. Syria's economy and infrastructure, including crude oil production, have been devastated a year later when protests against the rule of Bashar al-Assad escalated into nearly 14 years of war. Assad was ousted in December and replaced by an Islamist-led government that has promised to revive the Syrian economy. After President Donald Trump issued an executive order in June to lift U.S. sanctions on Syria, U.S.-based companies began developing master plans to help explore and extract Syrian oil and gas.
