A spokesperson for the HKMA said that as of August 31, a total of 77 applications for stablecoin licenses had been made to the HKMA, including banks, technology companies, securities/asset management/investment companies, e-commerce, payment institutions, start-ups/web3 enterprises, etc. The HKMA will not publish the list of institutions that have expressed their interest or formally submitted applications to it. The spokesperson stressed that the expression of interest or submission of stablecoin license applications, as well as the communication between the HKMA and relevant institutions, is only the process of applying for a license, and does not constitute approval for any institution, nor is it any recognition of its prospects for obtaining a license. The final issuance of a license will depend on whether the application meets the licensing conditions.
