Lee Eog-weon, the nominee for the chairpersonship of the South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC), said in a written response to the confirmation hearing that cryptocurrencies lack intrinsic value and cannot be used as a store of value or medium of exchange due to high volatility. He also expressed concern about pension investments in crypto assets. The remarks immediately triggered a backlash from the South Korean crypto industry, which saw its views as backwards, especially at a time when global institutions are actively adopting cryptocurrencies. It is worth noting that Lee Seo-won is open to stablecoins, saying that he will support the local stablecoin development plan in South Korea, seeking a balance between innovation and regulation.
