Cøbra, a long-time maintainer of Bitcoin's official website Bitcoin.org, said Knots could replace Core as the reference software for Bitcoin network nodes to run. Earlier this year, most of BitcoinCore's veteran developers decided to make major changes to OP_RETURN, a Bitcoin scripting tool widely used to store arbitrary data on the blockchain, in October 2025.
If a node upgrades the software from the current Bitcoin Core 29 version to version 30, the new default in the Core software will accept and forward large amounts of data unrelated to on-chain Bitcoin (BTC) transfers. In the opinion of Core developers, raising the data carrier limit of the OP_RETURN can modernize the data storage role of the memory pool and align with the consensus rules of the Bitcoin ledger.
In the opinion of Knots (a forked and dissenting version of Core software), nodes should filter out most arbitrary data by default, thus preventing this behavior from taking up valuable block space in Bitcoin.
