Law enforcement authorities in the Netherlands and the United States have seized VerifTools, an online fake ID trading platform that sold fake documents for as little as $9 in cryptocurrency, in an operation that seized 23 servers. The FBI determined the marketplace had generated about $6.40 million in revenue. Dutch authorities estimate VerifTools has an annual turnover of about 1.30 million euros (about $1.50 million), making it one of the largest providers of fake ID documents in the world. The marketplace works by asking users to upload passport photos and enter fake data, which website operators then use to generate fake IDs. FBI agents were able to order fake driver's licenses in New Mexico and use cryptocurrency to pay for fake identity documents - although the exact cryptocurrency used has not yet been determined.
