According to emails obtained by Wired, the White House directed the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to add xAI's Grok chatbot to its list of approved artificial intelligence vendors.
xAI was not initially included in the GSA's August 2025 approval list, which included OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Last week's emails revealed that GSA leadership requested that the Grok3 and Grok4 versions of the xAI large language model be restored to the procurement list. Government contractor Carahsoft also updated its contract to include xAI, and as of August 29, 2025, both Grok versions were available on the GSA Advantage marketplace.
xAI previously announced a version of Grok for US government entities, but approval was delayed due to offensive content generated by the chatbot. There is no information yet on pricing or government discounts for xAI services.
