According to Decrypt, police in Seoul, South Korea, recently dismantled a multinational hacking gang and arrested 16 suspects. The gang stole the personal information of rich people by hacking into the website of the government and Financial Institution Group, and used fake mobile phone numbers to break through the security system to steal funds from the victims' bank and encrypted accounts, involving 28.10 million US dollars. Although the gang collected data on 258 high-profile individuals, including 28 cryptocurrency investors, 75 corporate executives, 12 celebrities and 6 athletes, the actual theft is said to have targeted only 26 people, whose account balances totaled 39.80 billion US dollars (55.22 trillion won). However, hackers stole the cryptocurrency of 16 of the victims, with the largest single cryptocurrency theft amounting to 15.40 million dollars (21.30 billion won).
Financial Institution Group successfully intercepted another 10 attempted thefts of $18 million. BTS member Jungkook's Hybe Entertainment stock account suffered an attempted theft of $6.10 million, which was thwarted by abnormal monitoring of the banking system and intervention by brokerage firms. Police have frozen and returned $9.20 million through rapid response measures.
