Hackers used Anthropic's technology to carry out a large-scale cybercrime operation that affected at least 17 institutions, according to artificial intelligence company Anthropic, in an "unprecedented" case of attackers weaponising a wide range of commercial AI tools. According to the Anthropic report, the hacker used Anthropic's proxy coding tool, Claude Code, to launch data theft and ransomware attacks on government, healthcare, emergency services and religious institutions in the past month, resulting in the leakage of medical data, financial information and other sensitive records, with ransom demands ranging from $75,000 to $500,000, paid in cryptocurrency.
