More than 4,300 ETFs now exist as a result of the breakneck pace of new fund launches, according to data compiled by Morningstar. For the first time, that number exceeds the total number of stocks, which now stands at about 4,200. ETFs account for about a quarter of all investment vehicles, up from just 9 percent a decade ago, according to the Investment Company Association.
