Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, wrote on the X platform that the Bitfinex data breach may be fake news, and the funds are currently safe. The sample data contains 22,500 emails and password records.
Bitfinex does not store clear text passwords, nor does it store 2FA secrets in clear text.
Only 5,000 of the 22,500 emails were matched to Bitfinex users
The alleged hackers did not contact Bitfinex, and if they had any truthful information, they would receive a bug bounty.
According to the information currently collected, the hackers collected email/password databases that may have originated from different encryption leaks. Unfortunately, most users use the same email/password on multiple websites.
Bitfinex is conducting an in-depth analysis of the system and no vulnerabilities have been found so far. Additionally, the KYC platform has strict rate limits and does not allow bulk downloads. While Bitfinex believes this is purely FUD, it will continue to review information to ensure nothing is missed.
