A 60-year-old cryptocurrency fugitive was arrested in Seoul for throwing cigarettes

According to Protos, a 60-year-old crypto fugitive was arrested in Seoul on August 22, 2025 on suspicion of a $13 million cryptocurrency scam. The man was stopped by police for throwing away cigarettes in an attempt to evade further questioning through bribes.
Police stopped the man in Seoul's Gwanak district, where he pleaded with police to let him go as he tried to hail a taxi. The man refused to hand over his ID and tried to run away, eventually being arrested. Investigations revealed that he was suspected of carrying out a cryptocurrency scam involving 17.70 billion won (about $12.60 million) between 2018 and 2019, with about 1,300 victims.
The man, who is currently facing 10 charges including assault and fraud, has been on the run since 2020 and has been detained by the South Seoul District Prosecutor's Office.
