More than seven years ago, a number of crypto exchanges, including Bitfinex and Canada's leading exchange QuadrigaCX, began experiencing serious funding problems. Crypto exchanges were suddenly "stuck" by their final payment processor, Panama's shadow bank Crypto Capital Corp, and no one in the bank answered the phone. As hours turned into days, weeks, months, it became clear that Crypto Capital Corp's staff decided to shut down and quietly swept away more than $8 million.
Shortly after, the list of people involved in the Crypto Capital Corp. scandal was made public, and it turned out that there were only four people: Reginald "Reggie" Fowler, Ivan Manuel Molina Lee, and brother-sister duo Ozzie Yosef and Ravid Yosef.
Soon after, an indictment was filed in the Southern District of New York, and soon after, Mr. Fowler and Ms. Lee were arrested. Mr. Fowler pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay nearly $800 million in fines and restitution, while serving 75 months in prison - though as of this month, he was still fighting for a reduced sentence. Ms. Lee, a dual citizen of Panama and Poland, is in a Polish prison.
However, Oz and Ravid Joseph remain unsolved cases. They managed to escape detention in the United States and Europe and are still on the run.
