Kim Nam-kuk, the digital communications secretary at the South Korean presidential office, has been acquitted at the appeal stage of a lawsuit related to cryptocurrency holdings after being accused of deliberately concealing a large amount of cryptocurrency assets in lawmakers' asset declarations.
Prosecutors had accused Mr. Kim of transferring funds from some cryptocurrency exchanges to bank accounts before formally declaring assets in 2021 and 2022 and then exchanging them back into digital assets, a move aimed at hindering ethical review of officials' property declarations. The indictment last August highlighted the contentious nature of the case and public regulatory pressure over how government officials declare digital assets.
