A US judge has ruled that Visa must face a new class action lawsuit over debit card monopoly

Judge Brody of the United States District of Brooklyn, New York, ruled that the $5.60 billion settlement of credit card fees reached in 2019 does not apply to a new round of cases accusing Visa (V. N) of monopolizing the debit card market. While the two sets of cases overlap, the facts in the new case are "materially different" from earlier cases. Brody's ruling concerns a lawsuit filed by merchants against Visa in October, with allegations similar to those filed by the Department of Justice in federal court in Manhattan the previous month. Brody's ruling means that Visa is likely to face antitrust lawsuits from both the federal government and private companies for years to come.
