The Trump administration is in discussions to buy about 10 percent of Intel (INTC. O) in a move that could make the United States the largest shareholder in the troubled chipmaker, according to a White House official and other people familiar with the matter. The federal government is considering a potential investment in Intel, which would involve converting some or all of the company's grants from the American Chip and Science Act into equity, the people said. Intel had previously been scheduled to receive $10.90 billion in Chip Act grants for commercial and military production. That figure is roughly enough to cover the targeted stake. At Intel's current market value, a 10 percent stake in the chipmaker would be worth about $10.50 billion. The exact size of the stake and whether the White House chooses to move forward with the plan are still in flux, the people said.
