On August 15, US President Donald Trump said he would impose tariffs on semiconductors in the next two weeks, in the latest sign that he is ready to significantly expand the tariff regime. "I will determine the tariffs on steel and chips next week, and I would say chips and semiconductors, and we will determine that next week or sometime in a couple of weeks," Trump told reporters on Air Force One on Friday en route to Alaska for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It was not immediately clear whether Trump was wrong about the steel tariffs. He had already raised import tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50 percent in June. The president has repeatedly promised to impose tariffs on chips and pharmaceuticals within weeks, but has yet to make an official announcement. In addition, Trump also hinted that tariffs on imported semiconductors could be higher, saying: "I'm going to set a rate of maybe 200%, maybe 300%?"
