On Thursday on Fox Business, US Treasury Secretary Vincent Bescent made it clear that the US government would not buy more bitcoin directly, but then posted script that this does not mean stopping plans to expand the cryptoasset reserve. Since Trump signed an executive order in March to create a strategic bitcoin reserve, the market has been paying attention to the specific details of its operation. The reserve is currently based on about $20 billion in cryptocurrency seized by the government from criminal activities, and the executive order explicitly requires the Commerce Department and the Treasury Department to study "budget-neutral" ways to expand the reserve. Bescent's statement "will not buy" on the show in the morning was interpreted by the market as stopping the expansion of the reserve. But in a supplementary statement on social media, he said: "The Ministry of Finance is committed to exploring a budget-neutral path to increase bitcoin holdings," and his spokesperson stressed that earlier remarks were over-interpreted - the relevant remarks in the program were only casual remarks, not major policy announcements.
