On August 13, sources close to the president of the European Union Commission said that if a comprehensive ceasefire agreement can be reached, Ukraine's allies are evaluating the gradual easing of sanctions against Russia. Sanctions will be reimposed if there is a violation of the agreement, the sources added. They want an immediate 15-day ceasefire (during which time sanctions will remain in effect) before the conflict in Ukraine can be suspended in a more organized manner. Separately, Italian government sources said they would push for Trump to involve Europe in his discussions with Ukraine when he has a video call with Putin later today. "He has been asking European countries to increase their military spending, so we have to be involved in these decisions," an Italian diplomat explained. The source added that on the phone, Italy will stress the need for clear military, economic and political guarantees for Ukraine.
