On August 12, US and international law enforcement agencies seized four servers, nine domain names, and about $1 million in bitcoin assets linked to a notorious Russian ransomware gang accused of attacking hundreds of institutions covering critical areas.
The Department of Justice said the operation, which began on July 24 and was carried out in conjunction with agencies in Canada, Germany, Ireland, France, Britain, Ukraine and Lithuania, targeted infrastructure linked to BlackSuit and Royal ransomware variants that investigators believe were developed by the same cybercriminal gang.
Since 2022, authorities say, the gang has extorted more than $500 million in ransom, with the highest single amount reaching $60 million. During that time, they allegedly attacked more than 450 victims in the United States, including hospitals, schools, police stations, energy companies and government entities, illegally profiting at least $370 million.
The seized cryptocurrency, worth $1,091,453 at the time of seizure, came from a digital wallet frozen by a trading platform in January 2024. According to court documents, the funds included a partial bitcoin ransom paid by a victim in April 2023, which totaled $1.45 million.
