On August 11, according to the Wall Street Journal, the chief economist of the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation has become a popular candidate to head the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). According to a senior administration official, the Trump administration is interviewing candidates for BLS director, including at least one long-time critic of the agency. Earlier this month, Trump fired the BLS director after the release of a weak jobs report, and officials are now weighing the replacement. The interviewee, E.J. Anthony, as the chief economist of the Heritage Foundation, has long questioned the agency's approach to employment statistics. A White House spokesperson said: "President Trump has selected the best talent to lead the federal government and will announce the new BLS director after making a decision." The move by the White House to consider appointing prominent critics signals Trump's plans for a major overhaul of the agency.
