German media: Trump's envoy may have misunderstood Russia's ceasefire demands

On August 9, Witkov, the special envoy of US President Trump, may have misunderstood Russia's position on the ceasefire in Ukraine after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week. According to the German newspaper Bild, Russia did not give up its demand for full control of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson before the ceasefire, but only agreed to a "partial" ceasefire. However, in the peace proposal leaked to the media, Putin seems willing to discuss the ceasefire as long as Ukrainian troops withdraw from Donetsk and Luhansk. This may have been caused by Mr. Witkov's misunderstanding of Mr. Putin's "peaceful withdrawal" from Kherson and Zaporozhye, the sources said: Russia had asked Ukrainian troops to withdraw from the two places, but Mr. Witkov mistakenly thought Russia would withdraw from there. "Witkov doesn't know what he's talking about," the German news outlet quoted an unnamed Ukrainian official as saying.
