On August 9, Gamestop CEO Ryan Cohen suddenly unfollowed all bitcoin-related accounts on the X platform, a move that drew attention on social media.
Gamestop currently holds around $550 million worth of 4,710 bitcoins, just one-third of the amount the company has planned to buy since April. Despite this, Cohen's investment attitude has been seen as lacking enthusiasm, even being called "worthless" and "non-Bitcoin proponent" by critics. In addition, Cohen has been nicknamed "Rugpull Ryan" to point out that its stock price has fallen 80% from its all-time high.
Although Gamestop raised $1.48 billion through a bond sale in April that it claimed would be used to buy bitcoin and the company's operations, Cohen used only about a third of that money to buy bitcoin.
