Koi Security, a cyber security company, said a malicious operation had stolen more than $1 million in cryptocurrency through a combination of hundreds of browser plug-ins, websites and malicious software. Tuval Admoni, a researcher at Koi Security, said on Thursday that the group, which it named "GreedyBear", had "redefined cryptocurrency theft on an industrial scale".
"Most gangs will choose a single approach - say specialise in browser add-ons, or focus on ransomware, or run phishing scams - but GreedyBear said: 'Why not all three?' The results were really successful, which was amazing," Admoni said.
The type of attack used by GreedyBear has been seen in the past, the report notes, but now cybercriminals are deploying more sophisticated multi-pronged scams to target crypto users - a sign, Admoni says, that scam gangs are no longer "just thinking about small things".
