Tesla (TSLA. O) is disbanding its Dojo supercomputer team, project owner Peter Bannon will leave, and Musk has ordered the end of the research and development program, according to people familiar with the matter. This means that Tesla's important efforts to develop self-driving chips have come to an end. About 20 employees of the team have recently jumped to the newly formed DensityAI company, and the remaining members will be reassigned to other data centers and computing-related projects, according to people familiar with the matter. Tesla is said to plan to rely more on external technology partners in the future, including computing power provided by Nvidia and AMD, and chip manufacturing services provided by Samsung Electric. The Dojo program has been in the works for many years and was once seen as the core of Tesla's multi-billion-dollar AI strategy. Dojo is Tesla's self-designed supercomputer system used to train the machine learning models that underpin its Autopilot and FSD, as well as its Optimus robots.
