Scammers are using AI tools to steal cryptocurrencies through deepfakes and wallet cleaners. Decentralized Finance (DeFi) developer Joey Santoro says a friend of his recently lost $2 million in a sophisticated deepfake scam.
The scammers used an audio deepfake by Paul Faecks, founder of the stablecoin blockchain Plasma, to pitch an advisor position to Santoro's friends and trick the victim to open a file on the phone, thereby obtaining his password and private key. Santoro warns users to keep cryptocurrencies as isolated as possible from everyday devices.
