UN Secretary-General António Guterres is pushing through a sweeping reform package involving $700 million in spending cuts in the face of a threat of divestment from the US, the largest donor. The plan calls for a 20 per cent cut in spending and staffing, which would bring the UN's $3.70 billion annual budget to its lowest level since 2018 and see some 3,000 jobs cut.
While the reform plan is officially tied to the UN's 80th anniversary, the scale of the cuts directly reflects the threat of disruptions in US funding, which traditionally takes on 22 per cent of the UN budget. Mr. Trump has suspended dues and withdrawn from several UN agencies, and the wider review is expected to lead to further funding cuts.
