On August 2 local time, the US federal watchdog agency, the Office of the Special Counsel, confirmed that former special counsel Jack Smith, who was in charge of the Trump case, was under investigation for "suspected illegal political activities". Smith previously oversaw the investigation and litigation of Trump's alleged overturning of the results of the 2020 presidential election and the improper handling of classified government documents.
