El Salvador's legislature has approved sweeping constitutional changes that allow an indefinite president to run for a second term, effectively enabling President Nayib Bouquer to stay in power beyond the end of his current term. El Salvador's Legislative Assembly said Bouquer's New Thought party and its allies voted 57-3 to approve five reform packages that also extend the presidential term from five to six years and eliminate the runoff vote. Opponents warned the move would centralize power and threaten democratic institutions because the changes remove term limits that have long checked executive power.
Ana Figueroa, a New Idea MP, has proposed ending Mr. Booker's current term two years early, so that the presidential and parliamentary elections would run on the same schedule. If approved, Mr. Booker's current term would end on June 1, 2027, instead of June 1, 2029.
