US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to adjust reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries, with experts warning that more tariff increases could be on the horizon. "Particularly worrying is the continuing uncertainty that trading partners will face in dealing with new industry tariffs and the potential for additional tariffs if the administration determines that countries are not acting in good faith," said Wendy Cutler, a former deputy US trade representative and now senior vice-president of the Asia Society Policy Institute. "There is no doubt that this executive order, along with related agreements reached over the past few months, completely tears up the international trade rulebook that emerged after the second world war. It remains to be seen whether our partners will be able to maintain this system without US participation." Stephen Olson, a senior visiting fellow at the South East Asia Institute in Singapore and a former US trade negotiator, agrees: "Don't think this is the end... More deals and higher tariffs will almost certainly follow."
