President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday raising tariffs on all Canadian goods not covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada deal to 35 percent from 25 percent, the White House said. Goods shipped to another country to evade the new tariffs will be subject to a 40 percent transshipment tax, according to a White House fact sheet. The White House said the tariff increase was the result of "continued inaction and retaliation" by Canada. Earlier, Trump told reporters that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had reached out to him before the Aug. 1 tariff deadline, but there had been no conversation between the two. U.S. Commerce Secretary Luthnick previously said Trump might reconsider the tariff policy if Carney "starts taking a friendlier approach and stops retaliating." ( Golden Ten)
