French President Emmanuel Macron said the European Union lacked sufficient deterrence in trade talks with the US, leading to the deal being criticised by many as uneven. "Europe does not yet see itself as a strong enough force. To be free you have to be awesome. And we are not awesome enough," Mr. Macron said at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. On Sunday, the European Union agreed that most imports would face a 15 per cent tariff, while the average European Union tariff on imports from the US is less than 1 per cent. Maros Sefcovic, European Union trade commissioner, acknowledged that this was "the best deal we could make under very difficult circumstances". In response, Mr. Macron said on Wednesday that the deal was not "the end of the story" and that negotiations would continue. "France has always taken a firm and strict position," he said, and will continue to do so.
