John Woeltz and William Duplessie, two suspects accused of kidnapping and torturing a bitcoin trader to obtain his keys, have been granted bail by a New York court. Charged with 12 counts, both pleaded not guilty, were released on a $1 million bond each and will be electronically monitored while being asked to surrender their passports.
Known as the "Kentucky Crypto Kings," the suspects, Woeltz, are accused of kidnapping an Italian crypto trader from Woeltz's SoHo mansion and subjecting him to torture that included threats at gunpoint, electric shock sticks and chainsaws, and pouring alcohol on him to set him on fire. The two also allegedly threatened to kill the victim's family.
Although the prosecution said there was evidence of similar behavior between the two men, Judge Gregory Carro found numerous credibility issues and decided to grant bail while continuing to review the evidence.
