President Donald Trump said he wanted Mr. Powell to lower interest rates during a visit to the Federal Reserve headquarters, while Mr. Powell stood aside with a deadpan expression. The market reaction to Mr. Trump's visit to the Fed was more muted. The drop in initial jobless claims had signalled a stable job market that did not need the support of the Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts. Mr. Trump's visit contrasts sharply with several other recorded presidential visits to the Fed. President Roosevelt visited the Fed in 1937 to inaugurate a new headquarters building, one of two currently being renovated. Most recently, in 2006, former US President George W. Bush visited the Federal Reserve to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Ben Bernanke as chairperson of the Federal Reserve.
