The US Attorney's Office for the Western District of Washington has launched a civil recovery lawsuit against a $7.10 million cryptocurrency involved in an oil and gas investment scam. Prosecutors allege that Geoffrey K. Auyeung, 47, and his associates lured investors into so-called "crude oil tank escrow accounts" with the promise of making a profit by leasing storage tank space. The investigation revealed that the funds involved were transferred to 81 different accounts, of which $1.90 million was used to buy assets such as bitcoin, USDT, USDC and Ethereum through 19 cryptocurrency accounts. Auyeung has been indicted in 2024 on money laundering and other charges, after 2.30 million dollars of stolen money in his bank account was seized. Prosecutors said they would accelerate the recovery of funds to compensate victims.
