The Trump administration is expanding its search for a partner to build the "Golden Dome" missile defense system, courting Amazon's Kuiper project and big defense contractors as tensions with Musk threaten SpaceX's dominance in the program, according to three people familiar with the matter. The shift marks the Trump administration's move away from its reliance on Musk's SpaceX company, whose network of Starlink and StarShield satellites has become central to US military communications. Trump and Musk's relationship was deteriorating, culminating in a public falling out on June 5. Even before the dispute, Pentagon and White House officials had begun exploring alternatives to SpaceX, two of the sources said, concerned about relying too heavily on a single partner for much of the $175 billion space-based defense system.
