The shift marks the Trump administration's move away from its reliance on Musk's SpaceX company, whose network of Starlink and StarShield satellites has become central to US military communications. Trump and Musk's relationship was deteriorating, culminating in a public falling out on June 5. Even before the dispute, Pentagon and White House officials had begun exploring alternatives to SpaceX, two of the sources said, concerned about relying too heavily on a single partner for much of the $175 billion space-based defense system.
