Trump escalates pressure on the European Union: minimum tariffs may rise to 15% -20%

Mr. Trump has increased his demands in his trade talks with the European Union to keep tariffs on European Union goods at a minimum of 15-20 per cent in any deal, according to people familiar with the talks, after weeks in which the two sides had planned to keep tariffs on most goods at a base level of 10 per cent. But Mr. Trump's tougher stance this time is intended to test the European Union's tolerance for tariff pressure. People familiar with the talks said Mr. Trump was unmoved by the European Union's latest proposal to reduce auto tariffs and expressed willingness to keep auto tariffs at 25 per cent as originally planned. Even if a deal is reached, the administration is considering setting reciprocal tariffs above 10 per cent, according to a US official. A senior European Union diplomat said that if Mr. Trump insisted on setting reciprocal tariffs at 15-20 per cent, it would return to the level at which trade talks began in April and could force the European Union to retaliate.
