Republicans in the House of Representatives overcame some internal resistance to scrap $9 billion in federal spending on foreign aid and public broadcasting. The House voted 216-213 early Friday morning to approve the Trump administration's plan, which had previously been approved by the Senate. The withdrawal became the first successful "money recovery operation" by the White House in more than 25 years. It effectively formalized cuts to foreign aid programs, including cuts to the US Agency for International Development, which was shut down and integrated into the State Department earlier this year. It also revoked $1.10 billion from the public broadcaster, which owns NPR and PBS, and stopped funding for the next two fiscal years. Republicans have long criticized NPR and PBS for their liberal bias.
