US tariff revenues surged to $87.20 billion in the first half of this year, according to government data. They have risen rapidly since the Trump administration imposed so-called reciprocal tariffs in April. They reached $26.60 billion in June alone, four times the usual level. Benchmark tariffs of 10 per cent had brought in more than $17.70 billion by the end of June, while specific tariffs on the auto sector contributed more than $10.70 billion, according to analysis by the US Customs and Border Protection. The average effective US tariff rate reached 20.6 per cent as of Sunday, the highest level since 1910, according to estimates by the Yale Budget Lab. At the same time, the share of tariffs in the total value of US imports has also risen rapidly. A new round of reciprocal tariffs, scheduled to take effect on August 1, is expected to further increase that number.
