UK Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden has voiced support for a ban on cryptocurrency donations at political events, citing the difficulty of tracing the source of such funds. The move contrasts sharply with the US, where the crypto industry has poured $134 million into pro-crypto candidates. The UK Reform Party has previously announced it would accept bitcoin donations, making it the first political party in the UK to accept cryptocurrencies. Ireland banned such donations in 2022, and several US states have imposed similar restrictions. Anti-corruption watchdogs have warned that cryptocurrency donations could increase the risk of foreign interference in politics.
