US stocks close: Alibaba up more than 8% NVIDIA hits new high

U.S. stocks closed on Tuesday, with the Dow initially closing down 0.98 percent, the S & P 500 down 0.4 percent, and the Nasdaq edging up 0.18 percent. NVIDIA (NVDA. O) rose 4 percent to set another closing high, AMD (AMD. O) rose 6.4 percent, the Nasdaq China Gold Dragon Index rose 2.7 percent, and Alibaba (BABA. N) rose 8.1 percent.
