On July 14 local time, a coalition of mostly Democratic-led states in the United States sued the Trump administration, accusing it of withholding about $6.80 billion in education funding approved by Congress. Attorneys general or governors from 24 states and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit in federal court in Providence, Rhode Island, claiming that the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Office of Management and Budget unconstitutionally froze funding for six programs approved by Congress, causing chaos in schools across the country. The lawsuit asks a federal judge in Rhode Island to order the release of the funds, which were supposed to be sent to states on July 1. It is understood that the funds are used to pay for free or low-cost after-school activities.
