Hassett, director of the White House's National Economic Council, is emerging as a frontrunner to be the next chairperson of the Federal Reserve, according to multiple sources, as Mr. Trump considers appointing a Fed leader who is more aligned with his position. Whether Mr. Hassett will ultimately be nominated is uncertain. But sources said Mr. Hassett had advantages that no one else had. He heads the National Economic Council and served as a key economic adviser to Mr. Trump in his first term. Mr. Hassett has worked for Mr. Trump for nearly a decade and is one of the few advisers who has both earned the president's trust and long-standing good relationships. After two stints in Mr. Trump's first administration, he joined a private equity firm founded by Mr. Trump's son-in-law, Kushner, and advised Mr. Trump on economic policy during the 2024 presidential campaign. Mr. Hassett is also seen as a disciplined and media-savvy mouthpiece, traits that Mr. Trump has long valued in his senior appointees. Evercore IS noted that Mr. Hassett's biggest challenge was to prove to the market that, despite being a loyal supporter of Mr. Trump, he was able to maintain enough independence as chairman to preserve the Fed's credibility.
