Analysts: Trump's tariffs on other countries are not expected to jump to 50% like Brazil's.

Mr. Trump said the latest tariff rates were calculated based on a combination of common sense, trade deficits and how the US has been treated over the years. But the letter to Brazil suggests Mr. Trump also sees tariffs as a tool to influence foreign policies he disagrees with. One optimistic reading is that Brazil's tariffs mean little to other countries' tariff-setting. Irving Tedford, a senior analyst at Beacon Policy Advisors, said the August 1 deadline gave Brazil a chance to negotiate the levies. He (Mr. Trump) is trying to do what he thinks will help his friend (former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro). It's largely a one-off, and I don't think other countries' tariffs will jump to 50 per cent from 10 per cent on April 2.
