In response to US President Donald Trump's announcement through social media on July 9 local time that he will impose a 50% tariff on imports from Brazil from August 1, Brazilian President Lula issued a statement responding that the statement that "the United States has a deficit in trade with Brazil" is purely misinformation. Official US statistics show that the United States has accumulated a surplus of 410 billion US dollars in goods and services trade with Brazil over the past 15 years. In view of this, any unilateral tariff measures will be responded to in accordance with Brazil's Commercial Reciprocity Law. Lula stressed that national sovereignty, mutual respect and firm defense of the interests of the Brazilian people have always been the core norms of Brazil's handling of international relations.
