On July 10th, Trump announced on Wednesday that he plans to impose 50% tariffs on Brazil, in part because of what happened to Bolsonaro, the former Brazilian president who has been jokingly referred to as "Brazil Trump". < b > The so-called reciprocal tariffs announced by Trump in April, Brazil only faces a minimum tariff of 10%. In his latest tariff letter, Trump told Brazil's current president, Lula, that "the way Brazil treated former President Bolsonaro... is an international disgrace." Trump has been fiercely defending Bolsonaro, the former Brazilian leader who faces charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2022 election. "This trial should not have taken place," Trump added. Mr. Trump also accused the Brazilian government of "insidious attacks on free elections and Americans' fundamental right to free speech", including censorship of "American social media platforms". Mr. Trump said relations with Brazil were far from mutually beneficial, concluding: "Please understand that 50 per cent is far below the number needed for the level playing field we have to have with your country."
