Partisan political tensions in the United States surged to a six-year high last month amid clashes over President Trump's tax bill and immigration policies, according to indicators released by the Philadelphia Federal Reserve. The Partisan Conflict Index, based on news articles covering political divisions, climbed to its highest level since January 2019. In recent years, the measure has risen sharply above its current level only around the start of Trump's first presidential term and during the government shutdown in late 2013. The index's recent surge coincides with the final phase of Trump's tax and spending bill, which slashed social programs like Medicaid while delivering income gains for wealthy Americans. Protests also took place in Los Angeles and other cities in June against Trump's plan to deport illegal immigrants.
