U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren has warned that if a bill to regulate the cryptocurrency market becomes law, public companies could bypass U.S. securities laws.
During a Senate Banking Committee hearing on crypto market structure legislation on Wednesday, Warren, a senior member of the committee, said she supports digital asset regulation that would strengthen the U.S. financial system, but raised serious concerns about the Digital Asset Market Transparency Act (CLARITY Act) currently under consideration in the House of Representatives.
Warren pointed out that the bill could allow "non-crypto companies" to circumvent the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) by tokenizing their assets. Under the House bill, public companies like Meta or Tesla would be able to get rid of SEC oversight entirely by simply putting their shares on the blockchain.
