Changpeng Zhao, the former chief executive of crypto exchange Binance, could face years in prison when he is sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to violating US money laundering laws. US prosecutors have told Seattle District Judge Richard Jones that they want Mr. Zhao to serve twice the maximum sentence of 18 months recommended under federal guidelines.
The hearing began at 9 a.m. PDT on Tuesday. Mr. Zhao's lawyers asked for a suspended sentence because he accepted responsibility "without flinching" and had paid a $50 million criminal fine. They also said Mr. Zhao had never committed a crime before and that none of the defendants in similar cases had been imprisoned.
The sentencing hearing for Zhao Changpeng will begin at 0:00 am on May 1
